Resin-bound driveways

Resin-bound driveways are becoming increasingly popular as public awareness increases and prices fall. A resin-bound driveway is a driveway that is laid using a technique that binds resin to the decorative unit.

The driveways are especially good because they look good, are durable, quick to lay, non-slip, they do not have loose stones that can damage cars, and they have good traction.

Resin-bonded driveways are created using the Scatter Coat method, which is one of the two options for creating resin-based coatings. It is cheaper than the Trowelled method (also known as resin-bonded surface) because the resin is only used in the base.

The scatter coating surface consists of a base, the resin and the aggregate. The base should be healthy and as level as possible. It must also be monolithic, so it must be a composite whole, such as concrete. A surface that has many joints can move, as shown in the finished surface. The base should also be clean of grease, standing water and loose material. Preparing the base properly ensures that the resin binds properly.

The resin is quick-set and can withstand traffic within a few hours. Resins are available in different colors and must be selected to compliment the unit. When the ingredients for making resin are mixed, the resin can be laid directly on the base. The resin should be spread evenly within a few minutes.

There are many different units to choose from, but they must be 6 mm or less to get the best effect. The unit must be spread over the resin layer as quickly as possible due to the fast curing time of the resin. An even coating is needed to avoid bald stains, and it is best to add too much rather than not enough aggregate because excess can be collected when the resin bound surface is completely cured. The stones sink slowly and the surface hardens for a few hours.
