Visit Perfect Palermo, capital of Sicily

In northern Sicily, Palermo can only be described as manic. The traffic is frenetic and, in contrast to the history and culture of this fascinating metropolis, adds to the overall excitement. Stroll the glorious main streets, marvel at the classical architecture, and soak up the atmosphere.

Then when you have a picture of grandeur and ceremony, go exploring the back streets and you will see another side of Palermo. Parts of the city that were heavily bombed in WWII were never repaired, while the money was invested in questionable construction projects on the outskirts of the city. The tragedy of the abandoned and collapsed buildings brings mixed feelings. There is something endearing about decay, juxtaposed with opulence. It reflects the character of many of the people of Sicily who are proud, but their daily life constantly presents challenges.

The Quattro Canti dominates the old town dividing it into four neighborhoods. Stroll the streets and discover the richness of the churches and marvel at the interiors with grandeur on an unmatched scale.

Be sure to visit the Teatro Massimo and take the time to follow a tour. Even though the tour is not in English, it is worth every second to enter the Royal Box and pretend that you are an extra in The Godfather. The tour also takes you to a room with phenomenal acoustics. Stand at the center point and whisper something to hear just for yourself. Pick something appropriate to whisper like Mamma Mia, just for a moment you'll feel like a local!

If you plan to rent a car, be sure to pre-book all available insurance, the overages are high, and local insurance coverage is expensive. Sicilian drivers are fearless and will think nothing of attacking you. It's also worth noting that many of the old streets are narrow as well, so size matters, in fact taking a smaller car will be an advantage here. There are parts of the roads around Palermo walking tour where traffic goes from six lanes to two, and the locals treat it almost like a sport.

There is enough to fill a long weekend in Palermo, and it is also worth taking a trip to one of the mountain villages like Monreale, with its charming cathedral, one of the memories of Sicily.
