At the Olympics, the track takes center stage. After viewing the events, you may have wondered what the standard size of the running track is. The size of the track actually depends on the track season you are in.
Two seasons
There are two seasons for the track: indoor and outdoor. The indoor track season generally runs during the winter. The outdoor track season usually runs during the spring. Indoor track competitions are often similar to outdoor track competitions, with a few exceptions. These exceptions include that indoor competitions do not have the 100-meter sprint, and will instead have a 60-meter sprint (some indoor competitions will have a 55-meter sprint). The outdoor track is traditionally the most popular track season.
Track size for outdoor track
The stadard size of the running tracks UK for outdoor track is 400 meters. This length is also about a quarter of a mile. The track is oval in shape. Today, the tracks have a rubber surface; while the older tracks are usually covered in ash. The inner field of the track usually has natural grass or an artificial surface. The indoor field can be used for field events. Often the indoor field is also used as a football or soccer field.
You can find outdoor tracks everywhere. From universities to high schools to professional sports fields, you can find outdoor tracks. The number of lanes on an outdoor track depends on the level for which the track is used. Outdoor tracks in smaller high schools may have six lanes; while the tracks used in the Olympics and other high-level track events typically have nine lanes.
Track size for inner track
The standard size of an indoor track is 200 meters, half the size of an outdoor track. However, while the standard size is 200 meters, some covered tracks are 150 meters and others 120 meters. Additionally, some indoor track competitions will be held on tracks over 200 meters, however, due to the track size being over 200 meters, no official records can be set on these larger indoor tracks. In indoor competitions, field events only include high jump, long jump, pole vault, triple jump, and shot put. These events will take place within the circumference of the track.
