Heat pumps

A heat pump is an electric cooling and heating system used to compress and decompress gas for heating or cooling a house. This mechanical device pumps heat from a cooler to a warmer place and can extract heat from air, water or the ground. Heat pumps function as an air conditioner in summer and an electric heater in winter and thus include both a heating and cooling unit in one unit. COP, or power coefficient, which calculates the ratio between heat output and electricity consumption, measures the performance of a heat pump.



Heat pumps are the most inventive form of electric heating in moderate climates and cool a house by collecting the heat inside the house and efficiently pumping it outside. There are three types of heat pumps that can be installed: air-to-air, water source and ground source. Heat pumps can collect heat from air, water or soil and can use the same to heat or cool your home. When installing a heat pump at home, one should consider using an energy efficient heat pump system taking into account the climate of the region.


For example, air source heat pumps are a good option for mild and moderate climate regions, and ground source or geothermal heat pumps are efficient in climates with similar heating and cooling loads. The most common types of heat pumps are air and ground source heat pumps. Although geothermal heat pumps are more expensive to install, they are more efficient and less noisy.


But in order for heat pumps to work efficiently, they must be installed correctly and one must choose the right size pump that can meet the house's heating and cooling requirements. When choosing a heat pump, buy a unit with a higher Seasonal Performance Factor or HSPF. The pumps must also be equipped with defrost requirements for demand, which minimizes defrost cycles and reduces additional energy consumption and varmepumpe.


Heat pumps are much more cost effective than other conventional heating devices and are also becoming more commonly used for heating swimming pools and domestic hot water.
